Carrying a mobile phone is widely advised by the police and self-defense advocates as an important personal safety precaution.

Unfortunately, there are many a-risk people living on a fixed income. Some can't afford even a basic phone.

NOT-ME! is making a difference.

1. We are providing free working mobile phones to a-risk people who are unable to purchase one.

2. We are also providing free pre-paid minutes to make the phones operational.

We are currently holding a Cell Phones for Safety ™ collection drive. We are collecting for both functioning and non-functioning mobile phones. Phones that are not given to our clients will be recycled to provide funds to purchase air time minutes.

September 17, 2006 – 6:57 am I’m glad to hear there was a happy ending for 14 year old Elizabeth Shoaf, who was kidnapped and kept in captivity in a hand built, booby trapped bunker in South Carolina.

Entrance to the bunker Elizabeth Shoaf was held captive in.

Ms. Shoaf was able to send a text message to her mother from her suspected captor’s cell phone and investigators used cell phone towers to locate her general location. Once they had a general location, search parties found her standing in the entrance of the bunker which was located inside of a hill that was covered with plywood.

“We’re just glad that she’s alive and she’s safe and that she will be home with us,” her aunt, Geraldine Williams, told WLTX-TV in Columbia. “She’s a good girl. … We never believed that she ran away.”

The suspected kidnapper (and owner of the phone) , Vinson Filyaw, is 37 years old and is believed to have posed as a police officer when he met Elizabeth. There is a $5,000.00 reward for information leading to his arrest. He is considered to be armed and dangerous and has an unrelated charge of criminal sexual contact with a 12 year old girl.

FREMONT, CA (KGO) -- Some fast thinking firefighters and a woman's cell phone helped save her life, after her SUV went off a road and down a ravine.

How technology has now turned every cell phone into a potential lifeline.

At 3:30 on Tuesday morning, the driver of a stranded car called 911 on her cell phone.

"The call tower she had was a mile and a half from her location," Said Battalion Chief from the Fremont Fire Department Mark Neveau.

The woman told Fremont 911 dispatchers that she didn't know where she was; that she was sick and headed for a hospital when she drove off the road.

"So based on her conversations in her car on her cell phone she was able to describe kind of where she was at in the water in a ravine," said Neveau.

Fremont Police and Fire Units searched the area and found her unconscious but breathing near Grimmer Road and Paseo Padre -- 10 minutes after her call.

"Every single wireless call that comes in we average 1500 calls a month. Every single call comes in with longitude and latitude," said Lt. David Lanier from Fremont Police Department.

Fremont police would not show us the screen information from the incident, but did give us a print out that shows the longitude and latitude of the area where the phone call originated.

The wireless 911 call was transmitted to the nearest cell tower here in Fremont. The location of that tower helped rescuers find an area to search not an exact site. Officials say that kind of pinpoint accuracy is reserved for television police shows.

"In a sense the woman was fortunate that her accident happened here in Fremont. Six months ago they took over 911 calls from the CHP," said Lanier.

Fremont is one of 43 Bay Area cities that now have their own wireless 911 centers. In this case it helped rescuers get to the woman quickly.

Tech consultant Rob Enderle says most cell phones now available can help emergency crews locate you in most areas.

"The newer cell phones, the brand new ones have this capability. The older cell phones over two years old doubtful they have it," said Rob Enderle from the Enderle Group.

The unidentified woman was taken to Eden Hospital in Castro Valley. Her condition has not been released.

Doctors told Richard the bullet came at an angle, which along with the cell phone probably prevented serious injury.

Deputies are investigating the case, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain said. He said the case should serve as a serious warning that people should consider the consequences before firing a gun.

However, Strain said investigators don't believe the shooting was intentional

Beagle receives award after dialing 911 when man suffered seizure

ORLANDO, Fla. - A 17-pound beagle named Belle is more than man’s best friend. She’s a lifesaver.

Belle was in Washington, D.C., on Monday to receive an award for biting onto owner Kevin Weaver’s cell phone to call 911 after the diabetic man had a seizure and collapsed.

“There is no doubt in my mind that I’d be dead if I didn’t have Belle,” said Weaver, 34, whose blood sugar had dropped dangerously low. Belle had been trained to summon help in just those circumstances. She had been taught to bite down on the number 9 on his cell phone contacting 911.
